What counts as anime?
At its simplest, anime is animation produced in Japan — but it has grown into a recognisable style and storytelling tradition all its own. Most anime begins life as manga (Japanese comics) before being adapted, and series range from long-running shonen battle epics to tightly plotted thrillers, romances and studio films.
